What to Expect

A Rocky Horror survival guide: What to expect at your 1st show.

The time has finally come, whether you’ve finally given into that one nagging friend or your curiosity has gotten the better of you, you’ve decided to lose your virginity. Your Rocky Horror virginity. Feeling a bit nervous? Relax. Here is your guide to help you survive your 1st live showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Disclaimer: Our show is intended to be rude, crude, and thoroughly disgusting. We will insult anyone and everyone during our show. Our language wouldn’t be considered proper for a drunken sailor. You are going to be offended. Just remember: It isn’t personal.

I’m going to go over a typical show here with us (Crazed Imaginations of San Diego, CA) however there are many other casts around the U.S. and all over the world. While there are key similarities, things can be very different from cast to cast. We encourage everyone to see as many different casts as you possibly can.

Now, its time to give yourself to the lips!

Should I watch the movie before hand?

That’s up to you. Watching it before seeing a live cast perform will help you understand the movie, and going without watching it can be a lot to take in all at once. However,  I will say this, DO NOT GO TO A LIVE SHADOW CAST AND EXPECT TO WATCH THE MOVIE. Going to a live show is so much more of an experience than just watching a movie. We do callbacks through out the entire movie. What are callbacks? I’ll get to take a bit later, but its not unlike Riff Tracks or Mystery Science Theater 3000.

What should I bring/ wear? What do I need to know?

We accept cash and cash only, so plan accordingly. We have theme nights and lingerie nights, but there’s no dress code. However, please keep it street legal. (No thongs or pasties please!)  Our show doesn’t have an age requirement but we suggest that you are of age to see this R-Rated movie. Get to our show before midnight to line up, purchase a prop bag and interact with us a bit. The show starts when you arrive, not when the movie begins. Other casts have different rules, so be sure to check their website and pay attention during their rules. Last, but not least, an open mind. This is an event. Its a party. Take in the chaos happening around you and try to become a part of it.

I watched the movie, I checked out your website. I am here, prop bag in hand, Brad has already hit on me, I’m ready!!

If we haven’t recognized you, chances are someone has approached you about being a virgin and is trying to draw a dick on you. Go with it. As a virgin, there will be a slight poking of fun before the movie begins. We’re going to try and embarrass you as much as possible, in a loving and entertaining way. Its all in good fun. If you really don’t want to be written on, its fine to decline. Or try and wash it off in the bathroom. We will make fun of you more so, but hey. You do you.

Once inside, we’ll have music playing. If you wanna dance along, dance your little heart out. We’re here to party and let the rest of the audience in.

“Something is happening. People are doing stuff on stage and I’m confused.” That’s something we like to call a Preshow. We’re here to entertain you. It probably a cleaver, funny, or raunchy musical number. Sit back and enjoy whats happening. We won’t tell.

“Someone is now screaming about rules or something?” Yes. We as a cast and the theater have some basic rules for our show. We know, its loud, people are yelling at you, just do your best to listen and follow along. Its mostly all common sense things, which surprisingly isn’t all that common. But none the less, its important to give you the low down, while trying to keep it as entertaining as possible.

Oh fuck, that’s me. Yea, buddy, that’s you. What’s gonna happen? Well, that greatly depends on which of our theaters you’re at. We have to be more tame at the La Paloma, but at The Ken we can let loose! Without giving too much away, were gonna play some slightly crude, rude, and probably offensive to some, funny games with you and embarrass you a bit. Its meant to be funny. If you REALLY don’t wish to participate, you really don’t have too. You can sit right back down and watch. We might give you shit for being a pussy, but hey. It isn’t personal.

And finally. The Movie.

Holy shit. Its starting! Sit back, relax and enjoy. But, oh my god. Why are those people screaming? Ah, yes. Callbacks. What are they? Callbacks or AP Lines (audience participation) are lines you say out loud at certain parts or lines in the movie and the next line (or previous lines) to create a funny joke. Or something raunchy. Or offensive. We do callbacks. A lot of callbacks. (some casts do less, or even more than we do.) We encourage our audience to do callbacks with us. It is loud and obnoxious and not always perfectly on time. See, we care more about the fun and want to make sure YOU are having fun, rather than having everything be polished. It’s a whole lot of sluts and assholes through out the ENTIRE movie. So if you’re looking to actually watch this movie that we’re all making fun of, be advised! But if you want to dress up, scream cuss words out into a crowded theater and throw toilet paper at your best friend then this is for you. We are actually making fun of this movie. What did you expect?

Okay, but what about my prop bag stuff? During certain parts of the movie, you’ll throw some stuff. Squirt some water. Use the lighter. Watch whats happening around you to kind of know when to do what. We’ll try to help you as much as possible. And you can keep those fun little trinkets! Or leave them in the theater. For us to clean up. Yay.

We want you to have fun. This is an audience participation show, which means, you should participate! What a fucking stretch! Its perfectly okay to scream, laugh, yell, cheer, moan, groan and be loud about it during this entire show. We want to make sure youre having a good time. We want to entertain you from start to finish.

The show is over. Now what?

If you want pictures, you’re welcome to ask us for some! Have questions after your experience, feel free to talk with us! You can head down to the Denny’s down the street, some of us might be there. (Note, we usually make it a big to do after Lingerie Nights)

I hated everything. I didnt understand what was happening. The callbacks were annoying. I wanted to watch the movie. You all suck.

We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy our show. Our show isnt for everyone, and thats okay. You could love the movie, but hate going to shadow casts. Its cool. No hard feelings. But, I mean, if you have such a hatred for us running through your veins, head on over to our Yelp page & leave us a shitty review to laugh about later!

I dislike your shadow cast of the movie. ‘So & So’ cast does it better.

We’ll that’s the beauty of the Rocky Horror community. While you may not appreciate our flavor, others do. Go around an experience as many casts as possible until you find your favorite! Again, no hard feelings.

This isn’t the Rocky I remember! Back in the 80’s it was soooo much better! This sucks now! What the hell.

Times change man! As people come and go through casts they bring different ideas and personalities. We try to stay relevant and evolve as a cast. Sorry you didn’t enjoy what has become of Rocky, old timer, but we can promise we aren’t far off from other casts in our area.

This isn’t the Rocky Horror Show, which is based on the screenplay and is usually performed by paid actors. We’re just a bunch of “normal” people who happen to enjoy what we do, and we hope you enjoy our show too!
